Washer Won't Spin or Drain: The Checks That Fix Most Cases
The cycle ends but the tub is full of water and the clothes are soaking wet and heavy. Sometimes the machine tries to spin, shakes violently for a few seconds, and gives up — or it just sits there, humming, with the timer frozen.
What you’re seeing
- Cycle finishes with standing water and sopping-wet clothes
- Washer shakes or bangs loudly, then aborts the spin
- Drain pump hums but water doesn't leave the tub
- Error code for drain or spin on the display
- Machine stops mid-cycle with the timer stuck on the same number
3 things to check yourself
- Redistribute the load. One heavy item (a bath mat, a comforter, a pair of jeans) throws the drum off balance — spread it around evenly and restart the spin.
- Clean the drain pump filter (front-loaders). Open the small access panel at the bottom front, unscrew the filter cap over a towel, and pull out the lint, coins, and hairpins packed inside.
- Check the drain hose behind the machine. It should loop up and into the standpipe — if it's shoved too far down or lying flat, water can siphon back or never leave.
