Ice Maker Not Working: The Usual Suspects, in Order

The ice bin is empty and stays empty — no cubes dropping, sometimes a thin sheet of ice stuck in the mold, sometimes nothing at all. The freezer is cold, the water dispenser may or may not still work, and the ice maker just quietly quit.

What you’re seeing

  • Ice bin empty with no new cubes forming for days
  • Thin, hollow, or misshapen cubes, or far fewer than usual
  • Water leaking into the bin and freezing into one solid block
  • Clicking or grinding noises from the ice maker area
  • Ice maker's on/off arm stuck up, or the control shows it as off when it shouldn't be

3 things to check yourself

  1. Confirm the ice maker is actually switched on. The wire arm (up = off) or the electronic toggle gets bumped accidentally — check it first.
  2. Check the freezer temperature. The ice maker needs the freezer at 0°F or below to cycle — if the freezer is warm, the ice maker is the first thing that stops.
  3. Look behind the fridge for a kinked water line. If the fridge was recently moved, the copper or plastic supply line can be pinched flat, cutting water to the ice maker.
